What's new in Frankfurt? Call a Bike
After successful starts in Munich in the fall of 2001and Berlin in summer 2002, DB Rent, a subsidiary of the Deutsche Bahn, the German Federal Railway, launched this super new service in Frankfurt at the beginning of May 2003.
Look out for these distinctive silver-red bikes throughout the city center and city districts of Bornheim, Bockenheim, Gallusviertel, Nordend, Ostend, Sachsenhausen, Westend and at the Hauptbahnhof Frankfurt Central Train Station. You can pedal your way pleasantly through the city at a cost of between 4 and 6 cents per minute, or for a maximum rate of 15 Euro a day.
Heres how it works: You need to make a once-only registration to set up an account and get access codes by calling Tel: 07000 522 55 22 listen to the automatic answer and press 2, then ask for an English-speaking customer service representative; 1 is for existing customers, 0 for information. Youll then be able to look for one of the CallBikes locked to lampposts, road signs, bike stands, etc. (there is no central parking area). Each time you want to rent a bike, simply call a central number from your handy or phone box to log in and away you go. The bike keeps track of the time, and youll be billed 6 cents a minute to your credit card or the amount will be booked directly from your bank account through the Lastschriftverfahren direct debit scheme (4 cents a minute if you have a BahnCard). To check out, simply lock the bike to a solid fixture and walk away. What could be simpler? Have fun. www.bahn.de/konzern/holding/db_rent
