SARS Impact on Employee Mobility
Mounting concerns over severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) have caused the cancellation or postponement of countless business trips, conferences and tourist visits, as well as delays on deployment of expatriates to SARS-affected areas and the evacuation of some expats or their families out of affected locations.
About two-thirds of the companies who responded to the recent ERC survey on SARS noted that they currently have expats in SARS-affected locations, and at the current time, most have no plans to evacuate employees out of these areas. However, one-third of expats remaining at their posts are sending their families home, and in half of these cases, the company will foot the bill. Of the 28 percent who are currently relocating employees to SARS-affected areas, two-thirds will delay those relocations as risk assessment continues.
Regarding business travel, 53 percent are allowing only essential travel to areas affected with the virus, 27 percent have halted all travel to those areas, and 20 percent have imposed no restrictions. Internationally, the World Health Organization issued its first-ever global travel advisory, recommending that all but essential travel to Hong Kong and China's Guandong province be halted.
